Evernote – The Second Brain Every Mom Needs

Evernote - The Second Brain Every Mom Needs

I hate clutter. I hate stacks. I hate mess. I hate hunting for the one piece of paper I need. I hate filing papers so I can find them later.

For these reasons and more, I heart EVERNOTE.

Evernote is my digital brain. And let’s face it, what mom doesn’t need an extra brain?

Think of Evernote as a FREE digital filing cabinet that you can access from virtually anywhere – your computer, the web, your smart phone, your iPad.

Less Paper In My House

When a piece of paper comes into my house it has three options – trash, scan & file in Evernote, or keep hard copy. These days there are relatively FEW things that get that third option.

  • Kids artwork? Report cards, award certificates? Scan and file in Evernote.
  • New appliance owner manual? Find an online copy and save to Evernote.
  • Utility bills, mechanic bills? Evernote. Receipts that need saving? Evernote.

We have a combo printer/scanner/fax units (similar to the affiliate link on the right) and it has a wonderful “scan to email” feature and a document feeder tray on top. This means I can load a 10 page document and push one button. The file is scanned and it automatically opens a new email message with the PDF attached. I type in my unique Evernote email address and click send. DONE!

Organizes Research and “Need to Save” Online Info in Searchable Format

I never have to use browser bookmarks and then later spend valuable time trying to hunt down that article or resource. Now I have about a dozen common web pages I visit set in my Bookmarks Menu Bar. Everything else is saved to Evernote with the easy Web Clipper Extension. When I’m on a page I need to save, I click ONE BUTTON and it automatically clips the article (and not all the extra ads, etc) and sends it to my Evernote account. I use this to save recipes, research for my books, articles I think will come in handy when I’m speaking, etc.

I can also send stuff to Evernote from my phone. If I’m out and I see an interesting book I might want to read I just snap a picture and push a button to file it away. Eating out and drinking a wine I really like? Photograph the label and it’s remembered for next time. You can also record audio files, etc.

Create notebooks and sub-notebooks to your heart’s content to organize your stuff.

Of course a filing system only works if you can find stuff and Evernote’s search functionality is AMAZING. (NOTE: I do pay the $45/year for the premium account so that Evernote makes my PDFs searchable. Otherwise you can add tags to your notes.)

Saves Me Weekly

Evernote EssentialsAt least once a week, Evernote comes to my rescue because I am literally carrying my entire household filing cabinet in my phone. I was at the dog boarding place and forgot to bring Buddy’s shot records. Brought them up in Evernote and emailed them to the receptionist. Doctor’s office asks what meds my kid is on? Evernote to the rescue. Need a kid’s SSN? Evernote. (You can password protect notes for security.)

Every mom needs Evernote. It’s a compact program but it can do so much. One of the best things I did when I first started using Evernote was to buy “Evernote Essentials” by Brett Kelly (affiliate link). It is basically THE go-to guide for Evernote and is really easy to understand. It’s $29 and comes with LIFETIME updates. So as Evernote grows and improves, you’ll get updated “how-to” instructions. And it has a 100% money-back guarantee.

If you use Evernote I’d love to hear some of the ways it makes your life easier.

Living & Confirming the Dream

So today marks the close of day 7 of my 13-day road trip.

There have been some “bumps” along the way (that’s another post), but it has been FILLED with highs as well.

Jon Acuff wrote a great post the other day about what our dreams should feel like, illustrated by the perfect picture of his sister’s reaction to the ice cream truck when they were younger. (Read it here.)

That is how I have felt the last few days.

Surrounded by orphan advocates and adoptive families. Sharing stories of adoption, encouraging them in their fundraising process.

It is better than any drug-induced high could ever be.

Total confirmation that this IS my dream. Writing, speaking, encouraging adoptive families.

AND, as if that wasn’t enough, there was this…

Dave came out of the studio on a break to meet with people and Martha introduced me. He was so kind and gracious. I asked him if he would sign a copy of my book, right by his endorsement.

The lovely Stacy Kennedy was snapping photos like crazy.

There it is.

And, if you’re wondering, here’s what Romans 12:2 says…

“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”

LOVE!

Tomorrow I’m meeting with a woman from Show Hope, then some sightseeing and then it’s the start of the Quitter Conference. Cannot wait to soak it all in! I’m sure my twitter feed will be blowing up with awesomeness that I’m learning tomorrow and Saturday.

Going on the road, but leaving you with friends

Tomorrow I depart for a 13-day trip to the Southeast where I’ll be speaking six times. I’ll get to catch up with friends in Atlanta and Knoxville. Then I get to meet the beautiful Stacy Kennedy who was awesome enough to go down to the Dave Ramsey studio last June when I had my phone interview and take this picture.

When she heard I was coming to Nashville she even offered to have me stay with them. How’s that for online friendship? My husband thinks this is weird but we women get it, don’t we :-) I’m looking forward to getting the Nashville tour from a pro.

While I’m in Nashville I plan to stop by Financial Peace Plaza and hopefully meet Dave during a show break. I will try to be mature and mask my giddiness :-) Kidding. I mean technically I met him once, but that was before the whole book thing. Did I tell you that he mentioned my book on air again a couple weeks ago? I noticed my blog traffic doubled for two days in a row and I couldn’t figure it out until I saw a series of tweets. Super grateful to them!

I’m also attending the Quitter conference which I’m SUPER excited about.

Oh, and guess what’s kind of on the way between Nashville and Birmingham (my next stop)?

I’ll give you a hint.

That’s right. I couldn’t be that close and not make a stop at Graceland. My friend Kelly is going to fly in from Atlanta and join me, then ride along for my last two workshops before we end up back in Atlanta.

You can view my complete speaking schedule here. If you’re in Atlanta, Indianapolis, Charlotte, Nashville, or Birmingham I’d love to have you come.

While I’m gone I’ve got some awesome friends guest posting for me. I know you’ll enjoy what they have to say.

Crossroads of America Adoption Conference

If you live in the Indianapolis area, check out the Crossroads of America Adoption Conference put on by MLJ Adoptions.

They’ve got some great speakers and sessions planned. Check out the schedule here.

I’ll be speaking on Saturday morning – looking forward to it and hope to see you there!

This is just one stop in what I think is going to turn into the fall book tour :-) So far I have confirmed events in Atlanta and Indianapolis with possible events in Birmingham, Charlotte and Chattanooga. It’s going to be a blast. If you’re in that part of the states and are interested in having me come speak, let me know.

P.S. Watch the Upcoming Events list on the sidebar for updates!

Bring the workshop to the southeast

This fall I’m going to be speaking in the Atlanta area, then traveling to Nashville, and I have a few dates to fill if you know anyone that might be interested in booking an Adopt Without Debt Workshop.

Because I’m already in the area, your organization (church orphan ministry, adoption agency, non-profit) can save money since there will be minimal travel expenses.

These are the dates currently available. (If it says driving distance, that means around 3 hours.)

  • Sept 13th (in Atlanta only)
  • Sept 16-18 (Atlanta or within driving distance)
  • Sept 19-20 (Nashville area – or between Atlanta & Nashville)
  • Sept 23 (Nashville area)

If you know someone who might be interested, please feel free to download the PDF flyer below and send it to them. You can contact me at julie@adoptwithoutdebt.com if you have more questions.

Adopt Without Debt Workshop

Yesterday I had the privilege of being in Birmingham to deliver the “Adopt Without Debt” workshop for Lifeline Children’s Services. This was the first time that I had done the full 2.5 hour workshop and it was a blast. We got through all the material (although I can always add more :-) and those in attendance got to share a few ideas as well.

I loved getting to chat with everyone during the break and after, and got to hear some cool stories and great feedback.

Thanks to all who came. I hope you were encouraged and found it useful!

Thanks to Lifeline for having me. Thanks to Paul from Alliant Bank for sponsoring the event. Thanks to everyone who came (including my high school friend Kelley who drove over from Atlanta and was the official photographer and book sales lady)!

I’ll be in Atlanta on November 19th to do it all again. I will post details as soon as I have them.

She Speaks…God Speaks

Weeks before She Speaks, word began to travel on our Facebook group about the Prayer Room. Seems there are quite a few repeat attenders (now I know why) and they started to share their stories from the Prayer Room.

Amidst the busy day of workshops and networking, the She Speaks team created a room to escape the chaos and talk with God. Or listen. Or both. They want the weekend to be a time for these 650 ladies to hear from God and sometimes a quiet respite is needed for that.

The room is dimmed, soft instrumental music playing, chairs, benches, pillows – a place to sit or kneel and find quiet your hearts.

And then there are the names.

At the back of the room, on four tables, are sheets of paper containing each of the names of God. Then on little slips of paper are the names of the 650 women in attendance. Someone on the P31 staff prayed over each of those names and then placed their name on one of those sheets of paper, listening for the whisper of God to direct the placement. To give that woman an measure of encouragement or knowledge or just “a word” as Beth Moore would say.

How cool is that?

As I wandered to the back of the quiet room, I started on the left. My name jumped out at me immediately, placed there on the sheet right in front of me.

YHWH (Yahweh)

I AM
The One Who Is
The Self-Existent One

After some time in the prayer room I had a chance to look up the scriptures mentioned (and a little context).

Exodus 3:14 says…

4 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

Malachi 3:6 says… “I the LORD do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.”

What was interesting to me was that as part of my 5 minute talk on Saturday night I was talking about my struggle with depression. While this was not the specific angle I was talking about, the story of Moses and the Israelites wandering the desert was one that, in the midst of the depression, reminded me that God never leaves me, even in the dark and desolate times.

I got all goose bumpy when I read that and realized that. I’ve pulled down a bunch of study material on the name “Yahweh” and plan to dig into it this week.

Appearing on The Dave Ramsey Show

I am THRILLED to announce that I’ll be on The Dave Ramsey show (via phone interview) on Tuesday, June 7th to talk about our story and “Adopt Without Debt”. This is honestly beyond my wildest dreams and I’m so excited to keep spreading the message of hope!

You can listen live online. I will be on around 2:35 pm central time. If Dave is on one of your local stations (find out here) his time slot may affect what day it airs. It’s recorded live from 2-5 eastern time so if he’s on in the morning on your station I think that means my interview will air on the 8th.

I’ll post more details closer to the date, but spread the word!
