It’s been over a year since we started fiddling with Noah’s diet to see how it would affect his ADHD. First we took out preservatives, dyes and high fructose corn syrup. That made a huge difference.
After awhile we took him off gluten to see if that made an additional difference. After about 9 months and no noticeable difference we gave up on that. It’s not cheap.
Noah can be somewhat of a picky eater and he likes to stick to certain things so the challenge was 1) find stuff he would eat 2) don’t go bankrupt.
I feel like we’ve got a pretty good handle and he has quite a few snack foods to chose from. I make most of our dinners from scratch anyways so that’s not a big deal.
The cost thing is a different story.
Since he can no longer eat his favorite Quaker Chewy Granola bars they’ve been replaced with Clif Kidz Bars. For fruit snacks we by Annie’s stuff. Both items can be close to $5 per box. Occasionally Sprouts will have a sale and I will stock up but last week I spent some time doing some research and found a good solution.
It’s Amazon. Go figure!
First, the quantities are larger. For the Clif bars it’s a box of 18 instead of 5. With the fruit snacks you get a package of 4 boxes wrapped together. The savings are good.
But it gets better when you sign up for the “Subscribe & Save” program where they auto-ship you the item (you can pick a 1, 2 or 3 month interval). You save an additional 15% plus you get FREE shipping (no matter your order total). I may need to go in and adjust my shipments later but I’m excited to save some money and some trips to the store.
At Sprouts a box of fruit snacks is normally $4.69 (UGH!). On Amazon w/ auto-ship… $2.58
